A new classification of Chelicerata Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
Progress in classification of Chelicerata has been thwarted especially by two factors, viz., the concept of mites as one monophyletic group, and the opinion that this group consists of species with a highly modified plan of construction and without any trace of true segmentation. The only characters which are generally shared by all groups of mites refer to the presence of a gnathosoma (i.e. the cone-shaped, movable structure comprizing the mouthparts), and the occurrence of a larva with only three pairs of legs (the last-mentioned character is also found in Ricinulei). A comparative morphological study of the gnathosoma (Van der Hammen, 1970b, 1972) has, however, demonstrated that two fundamentally different types can be distinguished, which must be the...

A partial revision of the genus Metabelba grandjean (Oribatei, Acari) Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
INTRODUCTION The genus Metabelba was created by Grandjean in 1936 for Belbidae of which the solenidions of tibiae II and III are coupled with protective hairs, but of which the solenidion of tibia IV is free, long, and tactile. The genus belongs to the group of rather small species that are never covered with foreign material, but of which the cerotegument is very thick, especially on the moniliform legs, whilst the adults often bear the larval and nymphal skins. The species have three or four lateral apophyses : one (which is not always present) between leg I and leg II, two between II and III, and one between III and IV. We have been in doubt as to the nomenclature of these apophyses, for although they have generally been regarded as tectopedia, they do...

A revised classification of the mites (Arachnidea, Acarida) with diagnoses, a key, and notes on phylogeny Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
INTRODUCTION In 1961 I published a paper on a species of the genus Holothyrus, in which I paid also some attention to the general classification of the mites. Before that time I had chiefly studied Oribatid mites, and I was surprised by the neglect of important discoveries made in the field of Oribatid morphology by specialists of other groups. I realized that a comparative study of acarid morphology was badly needed, and that this could be the only base for a satisfactory general classification. I continued and developed this idea, and in the course of ten years I investigated, in a more or less detailed way, representatives of all groups of mites. In this way I published papers on Opilioacarida (Van der Hammen, 1966, 1968a, 1968b, 1969b, 1971),...

A structuralist approach in the study of evolution and classification Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A survey is given of structuralism as a method that can be applied in the study of evolution and classification. The results of a structuralist approach are illustrated by examples from the laws underlying numerical changes, from the laws underlying changes in the chelicerate life-cycle, and from the laws underlying the evolution of the chelicerate appendages. Suggestions are given for the study of the laws underlying the transformation of form, and some notes are made on structuring forces and the early stages of organic evolution. Some concluding remarks are finally made on deep structure, phylogenetic classification and evolution.

Acarological and arachnological notes Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A study is made of four subjects in the fields of chelicerate morphology, postembryonic development and relationships, viz., the functional morphology of the legs in Anystis (a fastrunning Actinotrichid mite), the musculature of the gnathosoma of Glyptholaspis confusa (Foà) (an Anactinotrichid mite), the evolution of the chelicerate life-cycle in the case of an irregular number of instars, and the relationships of the chelicerate classes and subclasses.

Berlese's Primitive Oribatid Mites Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
CONTENTS I. Introduction.................. 1 II. Bibliography.................. 4 III. Systematic review................ 8 IV. References..................84 V. Index...................90 I. INTRODUCTION Among the works of acarologists of the past, Berlese's numerous writings take a particular place. Although they contain descriptions of an enormous number of new species, and notwithstanding the fact that they must be regarded as an important contribution to progress of systematics, the way of publishing is superficial to such a degree that Berlese appears to be the author that created the largest number of problems. As a rule his Latin descriptions are extremely short and consist of a few lines only. When exceptionally a figure is given, it represents at...

Bibliografische aantekeningen over Jac. P. Thijsse's Vogeljaar Naturalis

Comparative studies in Chelicerata : I. The Cryptognomae (Ricinulei, Architarbi and Anactinotrichida) Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A comparative study is made of three groups of Chelicerata: Ricinulei, Architarbi and Anactinotrichid mites. Ricinulid terminology is revised, and a partly new interpretation of Ricinulid structure is given. Models are prepared of the evolution of Cryptognomic characters. Classification of the three groups is based on a cladistic analysis.

Comparative studies in Chelicerata II. Epimerata (Palpigradi and Actinotrichida) Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A comparative study is made of two groups of Chelicerata (Palpigradi and Actinotrichid mites, together constituting the Epimerata, a chelicerate class), and models of the evolution of epimerate characters are prepared. The study is based on the same methods and principles as the first part of the present series, and the same terminology has been used. The models of the evolution of characters constitute the epimerate archetype and the standard of epimerate classification.

Comparative studies in Chelicerata III. Opilionida Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A comparative study is made of the three groups (Cyphophthalmi, Laniatores and Palpatores) into which Opilionida are currently subdivided. Methods, principles and terminology, adopted in this paper, correspond with those of parts I and II of the present series of studies in Chelicerata. Special attention is paid to mouthparts and appendages, to opilionid relationships, and to the evolution of chelicerate characters. It is demonstrated that Cyphophthalmi present all the essential opilionid characters, and evidently do not constitute a separate group. It is also demonstrated that Opilionida are not closely related to Actinotrichid or Anactinotrichid mites, but to other groups with a so-called myliosoma (mouthparts associated with coxisternal feeding); these...

Comparative studies in Chelicerata IV. Apatellata, Arachnida, Scorpionida, Xiphosura Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A comparative study is made of four chelicerate classes: Apatellata (Solifugae and Pseudoscorpionida), Arachnida s. str. (both groups of Uropygi, i.e. Holopeltida and Schizomida, Amblypygi and Araneida), Scorpionida and Xiphosura. Methods, principles and terminology, adopted in this paper, correspond with those of parts I -111 of the present series of comparative studies in Chelicerata. Special attention is paid to segmentation of the body, respiratory organs, orifices of coxal glands, mouthparts, and appendages. The evolution of these structures is studied, and the relationships of the chelicerate classes and subclasses are reinvestigated and discussed.

Fortuynia marina nov. gen., nov. spec., an Oribatid mite from the intertidal zone in Netherlands New Guinea Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
On December 7, 1953, while collecting animals along the south coast of Biak Island (Netherlands New Guinea), in the neighbourhood of the Base of the Royal Netherlands Navy 1), I was surprised in seeing red Trombidiid mites creeping on stones in the intertidal zone. These stones, which fall dry at low tide, were overgrown with green Cladophora socialis and several species of red algae 2). I became interested in the fauna of the littoral, especially in the possible presence of other Acari, and I spent several mornings in observing the animal life on the stones. The Trombidiid mites later appeared to belong to a Platytrombidium species, closely related to the species described by Michener (1946) as Microtrombidium littorale from mangrove forests along the...

Further notes on the Holothyrina (Acarida) : I. Supplementary description of Holothyrus coccinella Gervais Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
The present paper is the first part of a series of two studies dealing with the morphology of the suborder Holothyrina. Some years ago (Van der Hammen, 1961), I published already an extensive description of a species from New Guinea (Holothyrus grandjeani Van der Hammen), in which paper I pointed to a number of important characters generally neglected in the study of Anactinotrichida. Because my material of H. grandjeani contained only one adult specimen, a number of characters (e.g. details to be studied in transverse as well as in longitudinal sections) could, however, not be taken into consideration. As a result of my 1961 study, a reinvestigation of nearly all species of Holothyrus, and especially of the type-species (H. coccinella), became highly...

John Ruskin as Zoologist Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A study is made of John Ruskin's work in the field of zoology. It is demonstrated that Ruskin's early interest in zoology was connected with his study of ornament, whilst his later studies are connected with his Oxford teaching and his social work. Ruskin's interest in zoology concerned groups frequently represented in art (particularly birds and snakes). Of these groups he studied, in a fragmentary way, the artistic morphology, the life-habits, the particular position to art and literature, and the mythological signification. Besides that, his natural history teaching was focussed on the protection of animals and respect for nature.

Morphology and postembryonic development of Rhizoglyphus echinopus (Fumouze & Robin) (Chelicerata, Actinotrichida) Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A study is made of the morphology and postembryonic development of Rhizoglyphus echinopus (Fumouze & Robin), a species of Acaridida (Actinotrichid mites). The study is based on the same methods and principles as the author's previous studies of mites and other groups of Chelicerates. Particular attention is paid to the homology of the setae of idiosoma and appendages, and to the postembryonic development of the paraproctal setae. A new interpretation is given of bursa copulatrix and fertilization.
